Make it make sense

Titled after Agent Mulder’s poster from The X-Files, I Want to Believe explores the enduring human need to hold faith in something—be it spiritual, existential, or simply meaningful enough to justify existence. The work reflects on how belief, in all its forms, continues to evolve with each generation.

Religion, spirituality, and even disbelief share the same root impulse: the search for meaning. The atheist’s conviction that nothing lies beyond the self can be as absolute as religious devotion, revealing belief as a universal human instinct.

Using the triptych format historically tied to altarpieces, Hauenherm expands the narrative and emotional range of the work, allowing for multiple layers of faith, doubt, and longing to coexist. The piece reflects both personal experience and a broader contemplation of how contemporary society continues to seek new answers to ancient questions.
